At LBS, we’ve been preparing for the long-awaited Brexit residency card renewals. We knew this day would come, and as always with French bureaucracy, we were ready for a few challenges along the way!
As I mentioned in my Riviera Radio interview last year and in our previous newsletter, now’s the time to dive into what you can expect from the upcoming renewals. Let’s break it down and see how we can make this process smoother for you.
Does This Concern You?
If you’re a British expat (or one of your family members) living in France before January 1st, 2021, you were granted residency under the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. Depending on your status at that time, you received either a 5-year or 10-year residency card.
Here’s what’s next:
– Renewal Process for 5-Year Cards
If you received a 5-year card, it’s time to renew! These cards will start expiring in 2025 and 2026, at which point they’ll be replaced with a 10-year residency card. The renewal process will begin 4 months before your card expires. Either online or paper submission depending on your prefecture.
– For 10-Year Cards
If you hold a 10-year card, don’t worry—you’re good to go until its expiry. When that time comes, it will be replaced with a permanent residency card.
– What About British Children Becoming Adults?
If your British child is about to turn 18, they can apply for their own residency card from their 18th birthday until they turn 19. In the meantime, you can request them a circulation document (DCEM) to enable them to travel freely with you until they become of age.
– What’s the Renewal Process Like?
We’re already in touch with several prefectures, some of which have their renewal processes all set up, while others are still figuring things out. The process will vary depending on where you live, but we’ll guide you every step of the way.
Some prefectures are asking for paper applications, while others have switched to an online submission system. Regardless of your location, we’ve got the contacts, the experience, and (most importantly) the patience to help you through it.
– What Documents Will You Need?
Just like a 5-year residency card,, you’ll need to provide a few essential documents. These include:
- Proof of ID & Valid Residency Card
- Passport
- Proof of Address in France
- Proof of Residence in France for 5 Years (such as tax documents, work contracts, rental agreements, utility bills, etc.)
Once you’ve submitted the necessary paperwork to the prefecture, they’ll either ask you to come in for a final approval or mail you your new card—it depends on the prefecture. We’ll stay on top of things to ensure the process is as smooth as possible.
How We Can Help You
